Elena takes issue with Damon and Stefan's plan this week: they tell her how Bonnie will help them immobilize Katherine so they can get inside the tomb, grab the moonstone and get out.
But Elena objects. Why? We'll find out later.
She actually seeks help from Rose, convincing her to take her to Slater's in order to learn more about Klaus. But once Elena and Rose arrive at his place, they see he's been killed. Using his ex-girlfriend to help, the ladies hack into Slater's computer and see he's been emailing someone named Cody often. Elena sends a message to Cody, pretending to be Slater and it says that the Doppleganger wants to turn herself in to Klaus.
That's her plan. Elena wants to sacrifice herself in order to save those she loves.
Of course, once Rose learns this, she calls Damon and says he needs to get to Richmond. He flees the scene of the tomb and heads over there. He's NOT happy about Elena's plan and becomes even less happy when Elijah shows up. He discovered Elena's locale through the help of Jonas, who used a special spell to track her down.
But Elijah spares Damon's life because he realizes Elena is safe when around the Salvatores.
Back in the tomb, Stefan and Bonnie run into a problem: Jeremy is being used as a snack by Katherine. He had tried to be a hero and get the moonstone himself, succeeding in tossing it outside the tomb, but being caught in the process. Bonnie tries to lift the trapping spell, but passes out from the attempt.
Still, Stefan rushes in there because Jeremy's life is in danger, saves him but cannot escape due to the spell. The episode ends with him trapped in the tomb, Damon not letting Elena in to help him and Stefan asking Damon to promise to protect Elena.
Elsewhere:
- Tyler and Caroline bond. They watch a video of Mason's first transformation and Tyler sees all the pain he'll soon experience. Caroline says she doesn't want him to be alone as he does.
- Matt comes over to tell Caroline he misses her and sees that Tyler is there.
- Luka teaches Bonnie how to do powerful spells with working alongside another special. We learn his father asked him to get close to Bonnie.
- Jeremy gets shot down in his attempt to kiss Bonnie.
Elena approached a tomb-trapped Katherine this week in order to learn about her history and Elena's role in it. Using blood to bribe her, and bringing along a book about the Petrovas, Elena got Katherine to talk. This is what we learned:
- In Bulgaria in 1490, Katherine gave birth to a daughter. Her disappointed family immediately took the child away from her and banished Katherine. She ended up in England.
- In 1492, she got close to someone named Klaus, before learning he was a vampire and also learning he wanted to kill her because she's a Petrova doppleganger and her blood can help break the sun and moon curse. Katherine befriended another vampire named Trevor, who helped her escape, telling her to go to his friend Rose's house.
- Rose welcomed Katherine in, but then locked her in a room and planned on giving her to Klaus because she feared his wrath. But when Katherine stabbed herself because she claimed she'd rather die on her own than be sacrificed, Rose gave her blood to keep her alive. From there, Trevor arrived, Rose left the room - and Katherine hung herself, well aware it would turn her into a vampire.
- This was her plan all along, as Klaus needed a human doppleganger to sacrifice. Katherine proceeded to leave Rose's place, which is what led to Rose and Trevor being on the run, for helping her in the first place. Katherine has also been on the run this whole time, but returned to Mystic Falls because she wanted to finally strike a deal with Klaus. She was willing to gather all he needed to break the curse - a doppleganger, a vampire, a werewolf, a witch and the moonstone, which she possess in the tomb - in order to hand them over and finally be free.
Elsewhere...
- Damon bonded with Rose, who explained how she found Elijah: via a contact in Richmond. Off they went to a special vampire coffee shop with double-paned windows and that's where they met Slater. He had spent eternity getting degrees and seemed like a helpful guy. But before he could reveal too much, Elijah showed up outside and broke through the unique window. All the vampire fled, with Damon pulling Rose to safety.
- Late in the episode, he and Rose slept together.
Meanwhile...
- Bonnie befriended a new student named Luka, much to Jeremy's flirtatious chagrin. He introduced her to his father, Dr. Jonas Martin, who quickly asked if she had relatives in Salem. The reason, Luka later explained? They were warlocks and his dad just wanted to feel her out.
- But there's more to it: the episode concluded with Slater calling Rose and telling her and Damon they could make it so that neither werewolves nor vampires ever broke the curse. But they'd need a witch and they'd need the moonstone. After he hung up, we learned that Elijah compelled him to make the call... and then to stake himself. Pan out, and we also see Dr. Martin come into the room behind Elijah. These two are working together.
We pick up with events where we left off in the last episode with Elena kidnapped, but the question is by who? Her captors turn out to be two vampires. The boys all struggle to figure out where Elena has been taken, and Bonnie does a tracking spell to find her.
Damon and Stefan take to the road to get her back. The brothers try and take part in some road trip bonding, but their common link, Elena, gets in the way.
Tyler suddenly has to keep his strength and werewolf skills in check, though it's not easy with Caroline keeping her information on his condition to herself. He breaks into her house and Caroline is forced to tell him that she is a vampire. They end up bonding and talking about everything.
Bonnie uses up too much of her power sending Elena a message, knocking herself out. She has been wearing herself out with all her magic use. Thankfully, the spell worked and Elena gets the message.
Elena is told by her captors that she is a Petrova doppleganger and that if she is killed, the sun and the moon curse will be broken. Also, Katherine herself was a doppelganger and the captors helped her escape her fate by turning her into a vampire.
The mysterious Elijah shows up for Elena, right as the boys arrive at the house. Elijah compels Elena to tell him where the moonstone is and also that Katherine is located with it. The Salvatore brothers kill Elijah and save Elena.
Stefan apologizes to Damon for forcing him to turn 145 years ago. Rose (Elena's former captor) comes to Stefan to let him know that the 'Originals' will come for Elena and that she wants to help him protect her.
The episode ends with Damon and Elena and he tells her that he loves her. Because he loves her, he can't be selfish with her, and his brother deserves her because he doesn't. He then compels her to forget everything he said.
Oh, and one last thing: Elijah isn't dead. Apparently, wooden stakes don't kill Originals.
Talk about an episode. We finally got to the bottom of the doppleganger issue that has been danced around all season. While I was shocked to find out that Elena is the key to the sun and moon curse (though what exactly that is, I'm still not exactly sure of), I wasn't expecting to find out that Katherine was once a doppleganger herself. I am interested to see where this news takes us in episodes to come.
I also enjoy what the writers are doing with Caroline and Tyler. I see good things for these two, except for when the full moon strikes and Caroline has to make sure that he doesn't bite and kill her. Their pairing is unexpected and I like that.
Another budding couple worth mentioning is Jeremy and Bonnie, and surprisingly, this duo has caused Jeremy to grow on me. In fact, the last few weeks have brought a more confident change for his character and I no longer find myself dreading seeing him on screen. I worry for Bonnie, though, as these nosebleeds and fainting will only bring bad things and eventually she could end up with the same fate as her grandmother.
Now, on to the short lived vampire duo. It was refreshing to meet some new vamps, especially ones that really invoke the true nature of vampirism. For a second there, I thought I was watching an episode of True Blood and, trust me, that's not a bad thing. I think that their delivery of the doppleganger curse was well timed. It's getting late in the first half of the season and I was beginning to wonder how long the writers were going to make us wait. Now that we know, we can move on to the real baddies, the Originals.
Speaking of, I for quite a bit of trouble ahead for the Salvatore brothers as well as everyone else in Mystic Falls. That trouble being in the form of the very angry, and not dead like they thought, Elijah.
It was good to see the Salvatores acting like brothers, working as a team, yet still spitting out oneliners. Stefan's apology to Damon was one of the standout moments in tonight's episode. I think I like it best when they work together, though that may or may not be about to change.
I wasn't exactly sure how to take Damon's message to Elena. Part of me feels like he really will do his best to let his brother have her, but part of me feels like it isn't in Damon's nature to be selfless, though I loved that scene, and I thought it was probably the sweetest and most genuine we will ever see Damon. Unless, of course, we end up in an alternative reality where Damon somehow gets the girl. Either way, the scene was beautifully done and I commend Nina Dobrev and especially Ian Somerhalder for their wonderful work.
All in all, Rose was a good set-up episode which will allow next week to begin with a bang. We got some answers, and we saw some good fighting, so, to me, it was a pretty good episode.
Now, hurry up next week so we can see the aftermath of these revelations.
Masquerade, is all about Katherine, or more like Damon and Stefan's determination to kill her at the masquerade. So let's first go through what happened.
The gang is all assembled, minus Elena, arming themselves with stakes. Stefan is determined to get rid of Katherine so that he can have Elena back in his life. There is one kink in this plan: Katherine.
Speaking of Katherine, she has a witchy friend in town. Katherine has brought her along so that, when she gets the moonstone back, her friend can break a curse. I wonder what curse that is?
Let the masquerade begin.
Katherine is there impersonating Elena. Bonnie gets vibes off of Katherine's witch friend, though she doesn't realize that they are in cahoots. Katherine doesn't take kindly to Stefan withholding the moonstone, and in order to show him how serious she is about wreaking havoc on the town, she paralyzes and then kills a girl in the middle of the party.
Caroline tricks Katherine into a room that Bonnie has spelled, in order to trap her so that Damon and Stefan can stake her. Which they do, only Katherine isn't the only one injured by the stake, Elena is too. Jeremy races to the room to try and stop the brothers from killing Katherine.
The stake misses Katherine's heart and a vampire fight ensues. Jeremy is able to stop the brothers just in time. Katherine informs them that she had her witch spell Elena and herself so that any damage she received, Elena would receive as well.
Bonnie finds Lucy (Katherine's witch) and gives her the moonstone. Lucy goes to Katherine and hands over the moonstone, only she is angry with Katherine for lying to her and spells it so that it renders Katherine helpless
Tyler accidently kills a girl when she attempts to kill him, after Matt's attempt to do so fails. Tyler is now a werewolf.
Stefan goes to see Elena and tells her that Katherine is gone, only she still wants to take time and feel safe before getting back together.
Damon locks Katherine in the spellbound tomb, but not before telling him that Elena is in danger. He says he will protect her and then closes the tomb. The episode ends with Elena being kidnapped by a man in mask. Got to love a masquerade.
My, oh my, then. Where to begin this week? Normally, when I write my reviews, I write as I watch. This week there was no writing and watching, there was only watching. I was completely engrossed from start to finish. The story this week was great. They knew we weren't expecting Katherine to be gone so easily and her saying Elena was in danger was, for once, something truthful.
I must say, that Nina Dobrev stole the spotlight with this episode. I adore her as Katherine and her mini-breakdown upon being locked in the tomb, screaming, "You need me!" was fantastic. It's nice to see her really flex her acting chops and show a real range of emotion. I enjoy Elena, but Katherine's emotions have more range and, for me, that's exciting to watch.
It was also great to see more of Bonnie. I feel like her character has been put on the back burner in the last few episodes, so it was nice to see her stand front and center in a few scenes. Katerina Graham is a great actress and it was great watching her interact with the newcomer Lucy (Natashia Williams). Though Williams was only okay, in my opinion.
On a side note, I think I see a bit of a Jeremy/Bonnie romance coming up in the future. Not really sure how I feel about that, though I must admit that Jeremy has been growing on me these last few weeks. Perhaps if writers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec do it right, it will be tolerable.
I felt bad for Tyler tonight. He's not my favorite character of the bunch, but killing someone in defense and therefore becoming a werewolf has got to be rough. I'm interested to see how he handles it all.
Lastly, I wanted to scream at Elena when she told Stefan she needed a bit more time to feel safe before getting back together. I realize it's a melodrama, but how much safer can you be when your boyfriend is a vampire who would kill anyone who touched you? Part of me was glad when she got snatched by the mystery party guest, though the other part felt bad because I'm sure it was tough having a doppleganger making your life hell.
I guess my next question is who was the kidnapper, and how long will it take before we have Katherine helping get Elena back?
All I can say is that next week better be one fantastic episode. They have my hopes up. This show is really picking up steam and I don't want it to have a midseason slump that kills the momentum they have going for them. There are some wonderful storylines going this season. I, for one, can not get enough of The Vampire Diaries.
Lots of love and promises were going on in this week's The Vampire Diaries. So, as usual, let's go through the recap first.
Katherine promises to love Mason even after he gives her the moon stone, while Elena and Stefan promise to love and help each other regardless of Katherines threats.
Jeremy goes to Damon to help with the moonstone/werewolf debacle. Alaric, Damon and Jeremy, then discuss the significance of the moon stone which is that it can possibly be used to null the werewolf curse.
Caroline and her mother are still struggling with the whole Caroline is a vampire-thing. They finally have a heart to heart and talk about all the issues. It was a talk that was a long time coming. It looks like Caroline being a vampire has actually brought them closer. Unfortunately, Caroline doesn't let her keep her memories.
The ever helpful powers of Bonnie show that Katherine is in cahoots with Mason. The brothers ask Bonnie to try and help them, which she reluctantly obliges to do. Bonnie reads Mason's thoughts and finds the moonstone at the base of a well, which Stefan jumps into, but the well is filled with vervain.
Damon tortures the now captured Mason and Jeremy shows up with a plant that is poisonous to werewolves. The torture ends quickly, though, and Damon rips out Mason's heart.
Katherine calls Elena and informs her that she has been replacing Jenna's vevain perfume so that she can compel her. As she says this, Jenna stabs herself in the abdomen due to Katherine's compelling. Katherine tells Elena if she doesn't stop seeing Stefan she is going to keep hurting her family.
In a truly heartbreaking moment, a tearful Elena and Stefan end their relationship for the sake of Elena's family.
Damon apologizes for riling Katherine up by killing Mason, but it's no use. Katherine has won.
Katherine ends the episode by compelling Matt to antagonize Tyler so that he kills Matt and becomes the werewolf that Katherine needs.
So how was it all? Well, for me, that was an episode that packed a mighty punch. So now, let's talk about the good stuff!
Damon and Tyler working together is, at times, hilarious and at other times quite frightening. Damon now has a pesky unwanted sidekick. Therefore, his quick quips about Indiana Jones Tyler had this reviewer laughing out loud. The laughter quickly turned to shock, though, when Damon lays on the tough reality of kill or be killed.
I was pretty sad that Caroline and her mother couldn't keep their honesty. Her mama said that she would keep her secret, and I'm pretty sure she would have too. It was sad to watch Caroline compel her to forget her memories, especially after they had finally put all their differences aside and had begun to get along. I know it was for Stefan and Damon's safety, but it still had me choking up inside.
The ultimate tearjerker for me, though, was Elena and Stefan breaking up! Why? I know it's for the safety of Elena's family, but it was so sad. Paul Wesley takes the cake as far as acting goes in this episode. His heartbreak over losing Elena, the tears in his eyes, everything about that moment was flawless. It's been awhile since we've really seen him shine, but Plan B changed all that.
The twists and turns that Katherine keeps pulling are great. I honestly never know what she may do at any given time. Nina Dobrev has continually been doing a fantastic job pulling double duty. Katherine is her own character and we see that in her acting. I'm sure its no small feat playing your own doppleganger.
I thought the softer side of Damon was a nice addition to his character. It seemed as though he genuinely felt bad for bringing grief to Elena and Stefan, which is something new to him. I think that the arrival of Katherine has actually brought Damon and Stefan closer as brothers, where before we continually saw them at odds with one another. It's a nice turn of events. I like watching them work together instead of against one another. The scene where they convince Bonnie to help this was especially nice.
All in all, I think the week break from The Vampire Diaries was worth it. This episode seemed to fly by, and at the end I wanted more, which is always a good thing to want.
I'm happy to say that this show never leaves me disappointed. The episodes are well put together and plotted. All I can say is hurry up next week, I want to see what happens to my favorite residents of Mystic Falls.
In the fifth episode of The Vampire Diaries, Kill Or Be Killed, we see how Mason triggered the werewolf curse, and how he killed his friend Jimmy. Death is a key to the werewolf transformation.
So what happened? Well, Stefan attempts to clear the air with Mason, in hopes that neither will get hurt. Damon is a little upset with peace negotiations, as he should be, since Mason tells Caroline's mother that the Salvatore brothers are vampires and that he can prove it to her. He does so by spiking the lemonade with vervain. This prompts Damon and Stefan to take action.
Unfortunately, Liz is on to them and ambushes them in the woods, shooting them with wooden bullets and then injecting them with vervain. Nice.
Elena and Caroline begin to have a heart to heart after Elena has a fake fight with Stefan. However, before they can get into the grit of things, Caroline's super hearing tells her that something isn't right.
From there, Liz takes the Salvatore brothers to an underground cellar. Caroline and Elena head in that direction, but not before stopping so that Caroline can kick Mason into a tree. Caroline is afraid to go into the cellar for fear that her mother will find out about her, but duty outweighs her fear and she goes in and saves the brothers.
Damon decides not to kill Liz because she is his friend. Instead he opts to keep her at his house until the vervain wears off so that he can compel her to forget.
Tyler and Jeremy decide to go back to Tyler's house and hang out with some girls. While there, the girls look at Jeremy's drawings and see that they are a bunch of wolves. Tyler takes him to his father's office and chokes him until he confesses that he knows about Tyler's secret.
Tyler and Jeremy don't stay mad, though. They actually end up discussing his uncle Mason and his secrets. In the end, Tyler gives Mason the moon stone because he almost lost control and killed a girl.
Caroline and Elena finally have that heart to heart. Caroline comes clean about spying for Katherine, even though Elena already knew. Caroline tells her she is doing it to protect Matt, because Katherine has threatened to kill him.
Stefan decides that the only thing to keep him and Elena safe is for him to drink human blood. Elena doesn't want him to do it alone and offers him her blood.
The episode ends with Mason meeting Katherine in the woods so he can give her the moonstone and make out. Talk about a twist.
That's the story, then, so how did it all pan out?
Alright, so first things first. This episode was full of some interesting twists. I was not expecting Caroline's mother to be so cold hearted toward her vampire daughter. I guess that is one mother-daughter relationship that needs some work. Though I was proud of Caroline for doing the right thing and rescuing the boys from peril.
Speaking of boys in peril, I did not foresee the Salvatores being in any serious danger this episode. I thought for sure next week, but it was nice to be surprised, which is something that doesn't often happen in a paranormal melodrama. I like that things do not always go as predicted on this show. It keeps the show feeling fresh and alive, which is something I really dig about The Vampire Diaries.
Kill Or Be Killed flowed really well. I enjoyed the alternating storylines of the group at the picnic, mixed with the group at Tyler's house. It seemed as though the episode really flew, right up until the end when my jaw dropped and time kind of stopped.
What the heck is going on in writers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson's minds? Katherine is in cahoots with Mason and has been this whole time? What!? Now that has my full and total attention and I am obsessing slightly as to what it may all mean. This show certainly knows how to keep and fans waiting.
On another note, I wanted to mention that I thought it was nice to see bits of the old Damon. It was almost sweet, in a Damon sort of way, to see him call a human, other than Elena, his friend. I think helping Liz accept Caroline as her daughter may just help Damon accept himself. In terms of the acting during all of the above, I must say that Candice Accola (Caroline) and Ian Somerhalder (Damon) did a fine job.
Finally, the final Stefan/Elena scene with the blood drinking and the kissing was perhaps a bit cheesy in a melodrama sort of way, but I feel as though the sincere acting from Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley saved it from being over the top. It made it believable and I honestly feel that, without this strong ensemble cast, The Vampire Diaries would not be as good as it is.
Until next week, when we will perhaps begin to unravel Katherine's web of secrets. I'm dying to know the reasons for all her random actions. Here's to hoping for some answers...
EPISODE GUIDE: Katherine Stefan enters the room while he sleeps and manipulate your dreams. But he can not believe that the real reason for his return to Mystic Falls is her love for him. And still the dream, which was more nightmare, her fear of losing to Elena Damon becomes evident.
In this case, life imitates art. In real life, the actor who plays Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has been great interest in the media because of their facial expressions sexy 1001, and the chemistry with the actress who plays Katherine, and Elena (Nina Dobrev). The crowd is great for couples.
Speaking of which, have been shown to Stefan, I excuse the expression, but a genuine Zé Mané. First, he has every chance of killing Katherine and does not, reinforcing the hope of Katherine that he still has feelings for her. She falls into a "froth" with Elena. That young couple more "salt-free! Elena has every reason to worry about how the presence of Katherine affects Stefan. In addition to not kill her, still keeps a picture of you after 145 years.
The pressure on Tyler Mason to find out how to enable the family curse Lockwood works when he says he knows the location of the Moon Stone Mason who both aspire. One-way trip to Tyler opened with the unusual revelation. How will he handle it? Immature and impulsive way he is I feel it will start making a lot of trash around.
Many flashbacks of the past appear in this episode explaining the events on the night in 1864, in which vampires were burned inside the church. And the Stone by Katherine Lockwood was used as a bargaining chip in negotiating their escape to the hidden fire, George Lockwood. This was how the stone which apparently has some supernatural power or spell came in the family.
With these findings we can see just how nasty, sadistic, selfish, and Katherine is a traitor. It reached the point of accepting burn all of their kind in the city in exchange for his freedom.
Caroline is handled by Katherine Elena to keep busy and away from Stefan as she spends the day with him at home. And during the barbecue Jenna, Caroline raises issues relating to unfavorable relations between humans and vampires. Even if it is to discourage demand by Elena Stefan, Caroline cites obstacles that make real and Elena later reflect on the matter.
The best part of the episode are the indirect sarcasm and Damon Mason and Jenna on the barbecue on their secrets. The balconies are great for Damon. Damon Mason attacks with a silver knife's mother Elena, and finds that silver is not just a myth of vampires, but also for the werewolves. Thus, war is declared, and known enemies.
Katherine finally tells why he returned to Mystic Falls, and promises to kill all the friends of Elena in front of her and then kill her in front of Stefan, if he does not back down. Alerted to the real danger is that Katherine, Stefan and Elena simulate a fight outside the bar where Damon and Caroline are also, that the news come to Katherine. I doubt that the tactics work for long.
I've never seen one so explicit merchandise in any other episode of The Vampire Diaries. Ford took advantage of the worldwide launch of the new Fiesta and entered the car through the series of Caroline. Revealed details about the panel, sound, steering wheel, panoramic and logo. Got heavy ...
The latest episode of The Vampire Diaries started off with a team meeting between Alaric, Elena, Damon and Stefan. Alaric’s wife had a lot research on Mystic Falls, and the term Lycan-thrope is tossed around the room. Werewolves, ladies and gentlemen, have invaded Mystic Falls.
Meanwhile, Uncle Mason goes on a secret trip into the woods. Tyler, having grown suspicious about his behavior, decides to secretly follow him. Tyler’s trip leads him to a secret underground tomb full of holding cells, chains and clawed walls. It's not tricky to work out what's been there.
Caroline and Matt, meanwhile, are having trouble finding common ground, since she can’t be in direct sunlight. That, and the small fact that he has no idea vampires exist. Bonnie takes this into her own hands and spells a ring for Caroline so that she can walk around in the daylight.
Now that Caroline is out and about learning how to hunt bunnies instead of people, she is beginning to cope with being a vampire, though she is still struggling with being a vampire around people. A big example of this is when she loses control with Matt and ends up drinking his blood. As you do.
Alaric, Elena and Damon arrive at Isabelle's old office and meet Vanessa Monroe, who surprisingly decides to shoot Elena with an arrow. Luckily, Damon is there to take the arrow in the back for her. As it turns out, she only did it because she thought that Elena was Katherine.
It is here that they discover that werewolves and vampires are immortal enemies, and that the bite of a werewolf is deadly to vampires. Damon also finds one of Katherine’s journals, which he gives to Elena as a peace offering. Sadly, Elena stands up to Damon and tells him that he has officially lost her friendship.
When the full moon strikes, we get to see the werewolf transform. Uncle Mason chains himself to a tree then collapses into his car. Stefan stumbles upon the car where we see that the chains didn’t hold, and Uncle Mason is free. Werewolf Mason attacks Caroline, Tyler sees this and is able to stop him from biting her, now the secret is officially out and Tyler knows.
And that was pretty much it, save for the fact that Caroline feels guilty for hurting Matt. So when she sees him talking to another girl, she intentionally acts jealous so that he will break up with her. Caroline wakes up the next morning, to find Katherine in her room informing her of all the fun they are going to have together.
Once again, a fair bit of narrative was squeezed into the episode. And the story this week was well planned. Last week, it was all about the action. And this week? We finally got some answers. Sure, we knew that Uncle Mason was a werewolf, but now our characters do too. We are also finally beginning to get to the bottom of the Katerine/Elena lookalike-conundrum. I can’t wait to see what secrets Katherine’s journal holds. Caroline also showed some maturity, though I’m sure that will all be undone now that Katherine wants to use her as a pawn.
Furthermore, I enjoyed the newcomer, Vanessa. I thought that she was a nice new addition and I hope to see more of her in the future. Alaric was also a welcome addition to this episode as well. It’s been a while since he was been at the forefront, and I especially liked that he got to kiss the girl in the end. I enjoy Matthew Davis (Alaric) as an actor, and I am glad to see his return to the action.
As always, Nine Dobrev (Elena), Paul Wesley (Stefan) and Ian Somerhalder (Damon) held their own, acting wise. The end scene with Dobrev and Somerhalder was nice, I genuinely felt bad for Damon and his loss of Elena. I know he’s had a lot of chances, but give the guy a break, he has a ton of baggage and his heart has been ripped out and stomped on by Katherine too many times to count. I just hope that Elena will see some redeeming quality before it’s too late.
All in all I think that this episode really showed us that The Vampire Diaries has hit its stride. Now it’s time for them to keep the flame alive, which they should be able to do, given that they have a talented cast, great writers and an interested audience. Not to mention the reappearance of Katherine, which I know has me begging next Thursday night to come a little bit faster! See you next week.
Caroline wakes up in bed gasping. She's alone in her hospital room, but it's soon obvious to us, and to her, that she's transitioning.
The next day, after feeding on a nurse and wiping her memory, Caroline escapes the hospital and goes looking for her friends.
Elena had hoped that the Mystic Falls would help restore things to normal, at least temporarily. Yeah, right.
Caroline confronts Damon and tells him that she now remembers everything he did to her before she died. She pushes him to the ground with her newfound strength, relays Katherine's message, and leaves.
Damon wants to stake Caroline, but Stefan and Elena won’t hear of it. They want to help her transition. Damon plots to kill her.
Why? Because he says it will end badly at some point anyway. Lo and behold, he then finds Caroline next to a dead body.
She killed some poor stiff who was working to set up the carnival. It was just not the guy's day. He'd already gotten in a fight with Tyler (more on that in a second).
Damon says that he can help her, but his plan to murder her is thwarted by Stefan and Elena intervening at the last second.
Then Caroline sees that someone else was watching the whole thing: Bonnie, who is horrified to see her friend this way.
Stefan tries to clean her up and tells her she will have to fight the urge to kill.
Damon buries the body of the guy Caroline killed, but when he returns to the carnival, Bonnie unleashes some crazy spell, effectively paralyzing him on the ground while dousing him in gasoline and setting him on fire. Witches ...
But, before Damon can meet his end, Elena breaks Bonnie’s concentration and convinces her to walk away.
It's not Damon's night either. When he gets home, Jeremy is waiting for him, having laced his liquor with vervain and fashioned a stake. It's Jeremy, though, and he ends up telling Damon his plan without actually doing anything. Then he leaves.
Meanwhile, Tyler is starting to realize that there’s something extraordinary about Uncle Mason. Mason is very interested in his nephew’s anger issues.
Damon, who happens to be in the other room meeting with the head of the council, overhears the Lockwoods' curious conversation and is determined to find out what they are.
At the carnival, Damon convinces Stefan to take on Mason in an arm wrestling match. Mason wins, which surprises Stefan, who says Mason's strength is definitely not human.
Stefan is still skeptical, but Damon won't let up. He convinces the carnival guy to pick a fight with Tyler, and when they start brawling, Mason steps in to end it.
Tyler sees his uncle’s eyes glow as he pulls off some insane kung fu moves that are definitely above human skill level. Mason claims he was just using Brazilian martial arts, but Tyler knows something is up.
Earlier, Mason had been asking if he’d seen an heirloom moonstone in the mansion. Tyler said no, but in reality, he knew where it was. At the end, he secretly pockets the beautiful stone.
Caroline reunites with Matt, and resists her urge to make him dinner. She's learning to control her vampire powers already.
After all that, Stefan attempts to salvage just a little bit of normalcy. In the early hours of the morning, he appears in Elena's bedroom and whisks her off to the carnival grounds, where he starts up the ferris wheel, carries her to the top and kisses her.
You have to hand it the second season of The Vampire Diaries: it sure knows how to begin with a bang.
To briefly summarise, Katherine is back, which was one mystery quickly solved by the Salvatore brothers. Caroline was saved with Damon’s blood. As was John, only in his case it was with Stefan’s blood, accompanied with the threat of being made into a vampire if he didn’t leave town for Elena’s sake.
Meanwhile, Jeremy’s vampire plan failed, so he’s still depressed. Katherine is all over town pretending to be Elena, and she is generating all sorts of threats and general commotion in her wake. She tells Stefan the real reason she’s back is to claim him and she breaks Damon’s heart by telling him that she only ever loved Stefan. Of course, Stefan doesn’t want to be with Katherine, and so she decides to take matters into her own hands by turning Caroline into a vampire.
How that’s for packing a lot into a season premiere?
Personally, I was pretty impressed with the amount they managed to squeeze in here. I thought that the writing was exceptional, and there were quite a few memorable scenes for us as well. The heart to heart between Damon and Stefan was my favourite. Paul Wesley (Stefan) and Ian Somerhalder (Damon) are wonderful at give and take in a scene. There’s just something in the way they play off each other’s emotions. Whether it is Stefan trying to do the right thing, or Damon being a smart alec, the actors always seem to convey that sense of brotherly love/hate.
Another stand-out scene for me was the one in Elena’s bedroom with Damon. It was sad to see the disintegration of Damon, considering how hard he worked to be the stand-up guy she was cheering for. However, I’m sure hearing “I only love Stefan” twice in one night by two different girls has got to hurt. Though I was still pretty shocked when he broke Jeremy’s neck.
I’m also curious to see how Nina Dobrev (Elena/Katherine) does now that she is pulling double duty, character-wise. I know she did it a few times last season, but that was only in the flashback scenes. Now she’s doing it full time, switching back and forth between Elena and Katherine.
So far I must say I like what I’m seeing. She plays heartless pretty well. The scene with Katherine and Damon, when they begin to get hot and heavy, and Damon pulls back to see how she really feels for him and she tells him that it has always been Stefan she loves, just about broke my heart. I hope that Dobrev can keep up the nice work she is putting in.
The other acting highlight for me is Somerhalder, though he never seems to disappoint. His ability to seamlessly convey Damon’s witty, sardonic behavior into heart wrenching despair is quite nice. Thanks to Somerhalder’s hard work and writers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec’s great script, Damon’s character never seems out of place. Though I do hope he can gain some control over himself before his newfound bad behavior gets himself killed by Bonnie.
For the most part I was pleased with the premiere of the second season. Though that’s not to say it didn’t have it’s hang ups. After all, who didn’t see the Tyler as a werewolf thing coming? Sure it hasn’t been said outright yet, but it’s only a matter of time. I’m curious to see where this will all lead and what the arrival of his uncle Mason will bring.
Also, I am a little over the sad kid routine that Jeremy seems to be wallowing in. Hopefully his ‘legacy’ as a vampire hunter will cause some commotion in the episodes to come, otherwise I’m tired of his antics. As far as John is concerned, I know we haven’t seen the last of him. He doesn’t seem the type to take a threat from a vampire very well. It will be nice to see when he conveniently pops back in for a visit to Mystic Falls.
Finally, I’m interested to see what Katherine has in store for the Salvatore brothers. I’m sure her turning of Caroline into a vampire is going to cause quite a bit of trouble. I also want to know how long Elena is going to be able to handle having a doppelganger in town, causing mischief in her name, and just how far her announcement of hating Damon will go. Stefan is sure going to have his hands full keeping the peace in Mystic Falls.
Stefan outlines his plan to get rid of Damon. Leave him in the basement with the verveine until he loses all his strength, then take him to the family crypt for 50 years and then reevaluate.
Damon has no intention of going quietly, but he's weak and seems to have no way out of the cell.
Jeremy's relationship with Vicki appears to be going well, although they still come from different worlds, it seems. He's a troubled guy, Jeremy.
Stefan feels guilty about being so mysterious and decides he's going to open up to Elena. Well, within reason. He tells her about his favorite music, books, and about Katherine.
She really appreciates it, but then she cuts her hand and things get weird. His face tenses up and becomes pale and he turns away. In a moment it passes, but she's quite suspicious.
The next day is the big charity car wash. Bonnie continues to discover she has magic powers. Witch-like, even. She sets a car on fire when a fellow classmate disses her.
Stefan, seemingly more aware of what's going on than anyone else in Bonnie's circle, helps her come to her senses. She goes home and cries to her mom that she doesn't know what's happening to her.
Elena becomes even more suspicious when an old black man swears he saw Stefan years ago - like 56 years ago. In 1953, when there was a horrible animal attack at the Salvatore homestead.
This is all getting too weird for Elena.
Caroline is starting to receive messages from Damon's mystical crow. Damon himself is appearing to her as well. She's his last hope of getting out.
Elena befriends a reporter and asks if she can get out the news station's archives. He agrees, and she takes off without telling Stefan.
Partying in the cemetery with her friends, Jeremy finds out that Vicki yoinked Elena's pain meds to get high off of. They get into a big fight and he leaves Vicki in the woods.
Caroline begins to see more visions of Damon and heeds his call, even though he doesn't know what he's doing. He brainwashes her into opening the door.
Zach tries to stop her, but the latch opens and Damon forces his way out. With a twist of the neck, Zach is dispatched. Caroline escapes just barely, as Damon lacks his ring to protect him from the sun. But he's out of the cage.
Stefan comes looking for Elena but can't find her. Matt tells him she's big on trust, and he'd better man up. Stefan goes home and finds that Damon has escaped ... but where is he?
In the newsroom, Elena researches what the old man said and finds out it is totally true. Her boyfriend hasn't aged a day since 1953.
Bit by bit, the pieces come together. He doesn't age. He can't be hurt. His face ...
Back in the woods, Vicki is still partying with her loser friends. As she goes to change the music on the car stereo, she sees a guy slumped over on the tailgate. It's you-know-who. She says he doesn't look good. He beckons her to come closer.
Don't do it, Vicki!!
Alas, within moments, Damon slumps into her arms, barely able to move. Until he feasts on her neck, and that evil look of demented bloodlust returns. Damon is so back. Then goes back for seconds.
Back at the Salvatore mansion, Stefan holds Zach, who is still motionless. Elena knocks on the door. As Stefan answers, she says "What are you?!"
What a fantastic episode! We'll get to the crux of it momentarily, but will start this recap by delving into a few of the side stories and characters:
- We meet Caroline's mother. She's the sheriff and she and her daughter don't get along well. It sounds like Caroline's father ran off with another man years ago.
- We also meet Tyler's parents. They help explain why he's such a jerk, as his father is the town's mayor and his mother is simply stuck up. These two host the town party that is the focus of the hour and Tyler is clearly ashamed to be there with Vicki, due to his parents' attitudes. As a result, she leaves, goes over to the Gilberts and makes out with Jeremy. Good choice, girl!
Now, on to the meat of the episode:
Everyone attends the annual Mystic Falls party mentioned above. Before going over there, though, Stefan is told a major secret by Zack: he's been growing Vervain, the herb contained in Elena's necklace that prevents Damon from getting into her mind. If Damon can be poisoned with this, he can be stopped. Stefan's first attempt at spiking his brother's drink fails, however.
But it seems like he has another plan.
At the shindig, Caroline - who seems to actually know Damon is a vampire; she and him talked openly about it in private earler, as she's clearly under a permanent spell of some kind with him - dances with Stefan, leaving Damon alone with Elena. He tells her the story of the original Salvatore brothers, whose named are on the guest registry for the first-ever one of these gathertings. (Viewers all know, of course, that the Stefan and Damon written on the registry are the same ones we see now.)
According to Damon, there was a major Civil War battle around Mystic Falls, the Battle of Willow Creek. During it, Confederate soldiers burned down a churn because they believed those inside were Union sympathizers. When the original Stefan and Damon tried to save a woman inside, they were shot and killed in cold blood.
Is this the way Katherine actually died? Is any part of this tale true? We'd imagine so. But it's hard to tell at the moment.
From there, Elena tries to elicit more information from Stefan, but he's mum on his past. She's annoyed and flees for the bathroom, where she runs into Caroline - and noticed the bite marks on her neck and back. Not suspecting the work of a vampire, of course, Elena just assumes Damon is abusing her friend. She confronts him about it outside and tells him to stay away from Caroline.
When Damon gets Caroline alone in the backyard, he acts like he forgives her. But then he says he has no use for her anymore. Cue fangs! He takes a chunk out of her neck, but then instantly falls to the ground. Stefan walks over and has finally gotten one over on his brother. He says he spiked Caroline's drink with Vervain, drags Damon away and we see him and Zack lock him up in the basement. Case closed? Not quite.
Caroline is still alive, but not too well. When she comes to, she sees a crystal lying next to her. Damon had stolen it from the Lockwood house and said he'd put it there years ago. She hides it in her purse and cries into Elena's arms when her friend comes around.
We're then taken back into the Lockwood household. The Lockwood parents are there, as is Caroline's mother and a man named Logan. He has a history with Jenna, having previously dated her and then cheated on her. At the party, we saw him try to win her back over, and now we know why:
This group wants to collect certain items, such as a Gilbert family pocket watch that Elena gave to her brother. The reason? They know there are five dead bodies, all of which have had their blood drained. How will these items help? It's unclear for now. But as Logan says to close the episode: "They're back!"
Why was this episode titled Friday Night Bites? You'll soon find out!
The episode begins inside Caroline's bedroom, as she freaks out when she sees the bite on her neck - and even more so when Damon bares his teeth and attacks her again. But she seems quite happy to be dating Damon, telling Elena and Bonnie all about it, when she arrives at school. She's wearing a scarf to cover up the bite, and Damon clearly has her in some sort of trance.
Meanwhile. Stefan makes the football team and proves to be a great wide receiver, much to the chagrin of Tyler. Bonnie is also having doubts about Stefan, due to the feeling she got when she shook his hand last week (she described it to Elena as "death" and her psychic vibes grew even stronger this week).
To try and get her boyfriend and her BFF to get along, Elena invites Stefan and Bonnie over for dinner. It's actually going well, as Stefan is intrigued by the witch heritage present in Bonnie's family tree. But then Damon and Caroline crash the party.
Damon mentions to Elena that Katherine was killed in a fire and admits he also dated her. He almost seems upset about the loss. Later, while the girls are in the kitchen, Stefan tries to get Damon to back off, but he fulls admits that humans are hit play thing, to do with as he sees fit.
In order to protect Elena, Stefan gives her a necklace that contains the scent of a herb. It works to perfection because Damon tries to convince her that she wants to kiss him later in the episode - and she slaps him silly for it!
Prior to the football team's game, at a pep rally that featured a nice fight between Tyler and Jeremy, Stefan confronts his brother again. He says that he knows Damon hates him because Katherine is dead and he loves her; and that, Stefan says, is Damon's humanity. His response? He attacks and kills the football coach. Ouch!
Animal control is called, but Elena starts to suspect something is strange for the first time. The reason? Stefan was definitely cut while breaking up the aforementioned brawl, but he has no wound.
To conclude the episode, Stefan writes in his journal and comes to the realization that Damon is not human, no part of him is. He must be stopped.
This episode delved more into the character of Damon, which meant it was a showcase for Ian Somerhalder - and he stole every scene he was in.
Vicki also played a central role because she was recovering from her vampire attack. Once Stefan learned that she had told Matt that a vampire was the culprit, he paid her a visit at the hospital and did his best to "glamour" her; i.e. hypnotize her into believing that an animal actually attacked her.
However, due to his avoidance of human blood, Stefan's powers aren't nearly as strong as his brother's. Later in the episode, there's an epic confrontation: while most of Mystic Falls is celebrating the rare event of a comet in the sky, Damon as Vicki on a rooftop. Stefan tries to intervene. But Damon re-glamours Vicki and says that a vampire attacked her - and it was Stefan. This leaves Stefan with a choice: he can drink her blood, get more powerful and then convince her otherwise, or he can leave her to tell the town that he's a vampire.
Stefan gives an impassioned speech that she can go tell everyone and even if they drive a stake through his heart, at least he'll be free from Damon. This guy really hates his brother!
Damon isn't moved, but he does get into Vicki's head one more time and takes away the vampire tale. What is this guy up to? That's what Stefan wants to know, but Damon likes being mysterious.
Meanwhile, Jeremy likes being high. He's falling more and more apart, as a history teaches guilt trips his aunt into feeling like a bad parent. She ends up going through his room and admitting to Elena that she's afraid of messing up as a mother.
Jeremy won't listen to reason at all, though. The only person that can make him happy is Vicki; and he appeared to be getting close to her after revealing that he's the one that found her (and after supplying her with pain pills), but she's kissing Tyler again by the time the episode is over.
Let's go back to the Salvatores: early in the episode, Elena shows up at their house and meets Damon for the first time. He isn't exactly welcoming, quickly alerting Elena to the fact that Stefan got badly hurt by his ex-girlfriend, Katherine. Stefan soon shows up, but Elena leaves awkwardly, upset at the Katherine news and at the fact that Stefan never said he had a brother.
While it seems like these two won't give love a chance, Elena realizes that she's just scared. She has to stop writing in her journal and start living life. So she goes back over to Stefan's, takes him outside and the two share a nice talk - oh, and a major make out session! Hot!
We thought the episode would end there. But instead it flashes to Damon and Caroline in bed (they again met in the parking lot, following their eye-balling one another to close the series premiere, remember?). She seems to be enjoying herself immensely... but so is Damon, in the only way he can. The last scene of the hour? His fangs coming out and a chunk of Jenna's neck going into his mouth!
The Vampire Diaries doesn't waste any time introducing viewers to a cool, scary, intriguing new world. The pilot episode kicks off with the murder of two Mystic Falls, Virgina residents. While the local news will report that an animal attack was to blame, we'll later learn the truth.
From there, we meet Elena. She's a high school student now living with her aunt because her parents were killed in a car crash. The episode takes place during the first day of the new school year, as Elena and brother Jeremy must face their fellow classmates for the first time since the accident.
Jeremy is clearly still affected, as he's resorted to selling drugs in the school's courtyard, while smoking up himself.
Elena, meanwhile, tries her best to tell everyone that she's fine, but good friend Bonnie can see right through it. She's also the first person to notice Stefan Salvatore, a new kid in school.
He captures the attention of every student, but only seems interested in one of them: Elena. He stares at her throughout a class they share together, much to the annoyance of Elena's ex-boyfriend, Matt. (We later learn that Elena and Matt broke up soon after her parents' death; he still pines for her, but seems mature about the situation for now.)
After school, we see Elena writing in her journal at the cemetery, directly in front of her parents' gravestone. All of a sudden, the fog grows dense and a crow lands on the gravestone. Elena freaks out, runs away, falls, gets up and then sees Stefan. They speak briefly, but as soon as Elena rolls up her pants to reveal a bloody cut, Stefan bolts.
Fast forward to a coffee house/pool hall, where many students hang out after school. Jeremy tries to talk to Matt's sister, Vicki, but she's all over a guy named Tyler. Once Jeremy finally gets her alone, the truth comes out: the two slept together all summer, but now she's done with him. She's moved on to Tyler, even though Jeremy warns her that he just wants her for her "ass."
As Elena leaves home to meet Bonnie at the establishment, she runs smack into Stefan. He's shown up at her house to apologize for his behavior at the cemetery. They make small talk and Elena invites him to the coffee house.
Once there, everyone is talking about this unexpected twosome. Tyler tries to help his friend, Matt, out by spilling beer on Stefan, who reacts to it calmly and intensely. He excuses himself for the evening.
When Stefan gets home to his uncle's place. his uncle chides him for "coming back" to Mystic Falls. He also brings up the aforementioned murdered couple and accuses Stefan of taking them out because he can't fight who he is. Stefan claims he didn't do it and retires to his room. He then opens up an old book and stares at the photo of a woman named Katherine. Her life appears to have spanned the late 19th century - and she looks exactly like Elena.
The next night, the entire study body gathers in the woods for a party. Stefan and Elena bond there, as she even tells him about her parents' accident. At one point, though, Stefan makes an excuse about getting them fresh drinks because his eyes and skin are starting to go into vampire mode again. While he's gone, we're taken to Vicki and Tyler making out, away from the party. He tries to go too far, she says no and Jeremy makes a save.
Tyler leaves, Vicki tells Jeremy she can take care of herself and walks away. But she doesn't get far: something (or someone?!?) attacks her. Jeremy later stumbles upon the body, the police are called and Stefan makes a getaway during the commotion.
In the hospital later in the episode, Vicki wakes up and can only get one word out to her brother, sitting bedside: vampire...
Meanwhile, Stefan arrives home, goes upstairs and a crow flies into his room. When he turns around, his eyes fall upon a face he hasn't seen in 15 years: his brother, Damon.
These two have a not-so-friendly conversation, which leads to an intense fight. We learn the following pieces of information during each:
- Damon knows of Katherine and of Elena. He mentions how much the latter looks like the former;
- Damon killed the couple that we saw at the outset of the episode;
- He also chewed up Vicki, but appeared to have left her alive in order to cause problems for Stefan;
- Both siblings wear a ring. It enables them to survive and live normally in the sunlight;
- Damon is considerably stronger than his brother. The reason? Stefan has stopped feasting on human beings.
We end the episode with Stefan stopping back at Elena's house. It's been quite the night for both of them. Elena invites Stefan inside, he accepts and the door closes on this fascinating first entry in The Vampire Diaries saga.
